Why Does Burnout Not Go Away Even When I Sleep?
Burnout that sleep won't fix is not tiredness. It is a deeper depletion. Here is the difference and why rest alone can't reach it.
Sleep fixes tiredness. It does not fix burnout, because burnout is not tiredness. You have been treating a wound with a remedy meant for fatigue, and when the wound does not close you assume you slept badly or need more of it. You do not need more sleep. You are carrying a depletion that lives in a different place than the one sleep can reach.
Here is the difference. Tiredness is the body asking to recover from output. Burnout is what happens when you have been spending a self you do not actually have, over and over, for a long time. It is the exhaustion of continually being someone. Of performing steadiness you do not feel, care you have run out of, competence that costs more each week to produce. Sleep restores the body's fuel. It cannot restore a self that has been draining faster than it refills, because the drain is not physical. It is the gap between what you show and what is left.
The reason it persists through the weekend and the holiday is that the holiday does not stop the drain. You take your depleted self on the trip. You lie on the beach still braced, still performing rest, unable to feel the ground because the part of you that would feel it has been spent. This is why people come back from two weeks off as tired as they left. Rest addresses the wrong layer. The layer that is empty is the one you have been renting out to the role.
Seeing this does not hand you a cure, and anyone who offers a quick one is selling something. It relocates the problem from your sleep hygiene to the arrangement that empties you. That arrangement is worth looking at slowly. And burnout at this depth is not always a thing to face alone. If it has flattened your ability to function or to feel, that is a reason to involve a person, not just a page.

This names the structure. Seeing your own version of it is the work. The Atlas takes what you brought here and shows you the pattern underneath it, free, and there is a free book that shows where the work begins.

What's the difference between being tired and being burned out?
Tiredness is the body needing recovery from effort, and sleep fixes it. Burnout is the depletion of continually being someone you cannot afford to be. It lives in a layer sleep cannot reach, which is why you wake up rested and still empty.
Why does a vacation not fix my burnout?
Because you bring the depleted self on the vacation. The drain is not the workload you left behind, it is the ongoing cost of performing a version of yourself you do not have. A change of scenery does not stop that drain, so you return as empty as you left.
