The Atlas, the Thread and the Witness

Questions people really ask

By , qualified therapist, author and philosophical mythologist. Twenty years in private practice. Updated . Enter the Atlas (free)

These are the questions people have put to the Atlas, the Thread and the Witness, and to me by email, answered in the order they tend to come up. Each answer starts with the answer.

About the work and who made it

What is Codex of the Architect?

It is a body of work in structural depth psychology by Michael Lauria: thirty-three books, over 550 episodes of The Architect Speaks podcast, and three guided steps built from them. The steps are the Atlas, the Thread and the Witness. The books and the podcast came first, over twenty years. The three steps are how one person applies the work to their own life.

Who is Michael Lauria?

Michael Lauria is a qualified therapist, author and philosophical mythologist. He has practised since 2006, with more than 25,000 hours in the chair, including about ten years of couples work, two years sitting with people in hospice and a year on a suicide hotline. His qualification is a Diploma of Counselling. He is not a psychologist or a medical doctor. There is more about him on his page.

Is Michael a real person? Why was the work published as The Architect?

Yes, he is a real person. The work was first published anonymously, as The Architect, so that it would be judged on what it said. In June 2026 Michael put his name to it. His public record, with the first book, the podcast and the interviews, is set out at forgingexcalibur.com.

Can I talk to Michael himself?

You can write to signal@codexofthearchitect.com, and a person answers. The Atlas, the Thread and the Witness are AI conversations and he is not in them. People who want time with him can add a guided option to the Witness, which includes a thirty-minute video call with him each month. He does not give counselling by email.

Are the emails I receive written by a person?

Michael wrote them, and most are sent automatically. The emails that follow signing up, finishing the Atlas or a deadline go out on a schedule. When you reply with a question, a person answers it.

Is it AI?

Is the Atlas an AI, or am I talking to a person?

It is an AI. The Atlas, the Thread and the Witness are all AI conversations, built from Michael Lauria's thirty-three books and over 550 podcast episodes. Nobody is typing the replies. If you want a person, reply to any email you receive and a person will answer.

Is it ChatGPT? Which AI is it?

It runs on a commercial large language model, and the model may change as the technology changes. What makes it the Atlas is what the model is given: Michael's books and episodes, and a way of asking questions that comes from his practice. The companies that process your conversation are listed in the privacy policy.

Why not just ask a free AI the same questions?

You can. A general AI answers whatever you ask it, on any subject. The Atlas asks the questions, follows one pattern through your answers, and writes it down at the end, drawing on one body of work. The Atlas is free, so the simplest test is to try both and compare.

Is what I write used to train AI?

No. The privacy policy says the model providers used do not train their models on your conversations. Anonymised patterns across many conversations, with nothing that identifies a person, are used to improve the service.

Trust and scepticism

Is this a scam?

No. The Atlas is free, asks only for a first name and an email address, and takes no card. It is made by a named author with a public record. The paid steps show their price before you pay, and the Thread is refunded in full if you ask before your first session. There is a longer answer on this page.

What's the catch? Why is the Atlas free?

The Atlas is free because it is the first of three steps, and the other two are paid. Some people who finish it go on to the Thread, and that is how the work is funded. After your Record you will be told what the Thread is and what it costs, and you will receive emails from Michael. Every email has an unsubscribe link, and your Record stays yours whether you buy anything or not.

Will I be pushed from one purchase to the next?

No. There are three steps: the Atlas, the Thread and the Witness. Finishing one never charges you for the next, and each price is shown before you pay. After the Witness there is nothing further to buy in order to finish. The work is built to end.

Does it work? Is it any good?

It does one thing: it names the pattern underneath what you bring, using your own words. More than 1,900 people have finished the Atlas and received a Record. Most say the naming was accurate and new to them. Some of what people have said is on the Voices page.

I already understand my patterns. What would this tell me that I don't know?

Most people think they understand their patterns. The odd person does. Most don't. What is unconscious is, by definition, what you are not conscious of, so the part of a pattern that is still running you is the part you can't see by looking for it. And if you do know your pattern and you still act it out, despite what it keeps costing you, then knowing it has done nothing for you. The Atlas names the pattern clearly, in your own words, as one thing running under situations that look separate, and the Thread traces where it is still operating now. Finding out whether you were right costs forty-five minutes and no money.

Does everyone get the same result?

No. There are no fixed types to be sorted into. Your Record is written from what you typed and is drawn from your own words. If the Atlas gets something wrong, you can push back in the conversation.

Privacy and your data

Who can read what I write?

What you write is stored on your account, so that each step can pick up from the last. It passes through the AI model that writes the replies and the companies that host the service, all of which are listed in the privacy policy. It is never sold, published or used for advertising. Access is limited to the people and processes needed to run the service.

What information do you collect?

A first name and an email address. Beyond that: what you write in the Atlas, the Thread and the Witness, the Records and reports made from it, and basic usage and device information. Payments are handled by Stripe, and card details are never seen or stored by the Codex.

Do I have to use my real name?

No. A single letter in the name box is enough. For the email, use any address you can open, because your Record is sent there. An address you keep only for this works, and so does a masked one such as Apple's Hide My Email. The Atlas works exactly the same. If you later buy the Thread, the card payment is handled by Stripe in the usual way.

Can I get a copy of my conversation?

Your Record is always in your account, where you can download it, and it is emailed to you. The full conversation is not offered as a download. If you write to signal@codexofthearchitect.com and ask, you are sent a PDF of what the Atlas said to you in your sitting.

How do I delete my account and my data?

Sign in, open Account, and choose Delete my account, or email signal@codexofthearchitect.com. Your sign-in, your email address and your mailing-list subscription are removed, and your conversation history is kept only in anonymised form. If you want the conversation history deleted as well, say so in an email and it will be deleted. Requests are completed within thirty days.

Do you sell my data or use it for advertising?

No, your data is never sold. Your conversations and your Record are never used for advertising.

The Atlas

What is the Atlas?

The Atlas names the pattern running your life in a single sitting. It is built from twenty years in the chair and the thirty-three books of Michael Lauria, a qualified therapist, author and philosophical mythologist. It takes about forty-five minutes, costs nothing, and ends in a written Record of that pattern, drawn from your own words. It is not therapy and not for crisis. The full walk-through is on What is the Atlas?

Is the Atlas really free?

Yes. It is free all the way to your written Record. You give a first name and an email address to begin. There is no card, no trial period and no subscription, and nothing turns into a charge afterwards.

How long does the Atlas take?

About forty-five minutes, in one sitting. Most people finish in thirty to forty-five. The conversation closes at about that point: it tells you when one question is left, and then it writes your Record.

Can I stop and come back later?

Yes. What you have written is saved as you go. To return, go to app.codexofthearchitect.com/login, enter the same email address, and use the code or link you are sent. You come back to where you stopped. It is built for one sitting, so finish in one go if you can.

Can I do the Atlas again, or keep talking to it after my Record?

The Atlas is one sitting, and it closes when your Record is written. After that it does not open a second sitting on the same account. Some people are sent one further thirty-minute session by email a few days later. If something went wrong during your sitting, email signal@codexofthearchitect.com.

Do I need to read the book first? Where is the book?

No. The free book, Before Approaching the Threshold, is emailed to you when you sign up, as a PDF and in audio, and you can read it before or after. The Atlas starts from your life, so you do not need the book, the podcast or any of Michael's other work. If the email has not arrived, check your spam and promotions folders, then write to signal@codexofthearchitect.com.

The Atlas stopped replying, or cut off mid-sentence. What do I do?

Send your message again, or refresh the page. Your conversation is saved, so you will not lose your place. If a reply still does not come, email signal@codexofthearchitect.com and say what happened.

Can I speak instead of typing? Is there an app? Is it in other languages?

The Atlas is typed, and the dictation on your phone's keyboard works in the message box. Thread and Witness sessions have their own microphone button. There is no app to install: it runs in the browser on a phone, tablet or computer. It is in English and replies in English.

The Atlas mentioned a book bundle. What is that?

A bundle is a set of the books and podcast episodes on one theme, sold once, from $29 to $99. Bundles are optional and separate from the three steps. All thirty-three books already come with the Thread.

The Record

What is the Record?

The Record is the written result of your Atlas sitting: a few pages in plain language, drawn from your own words. It names the pattern that is running, the moment in the conversation where you saw it, where it is costing you across your life, and what comes next. It is the part of the Atlas you keep.

Where do I find my Record?

It is shown on screen when your sitting ends, emailed to you with the subject line Your Record, and kept in your account, where you can download it. If you cannot find it, sign in with the same email address you used for the Atlas.

The Atlas has named my pattern. What do I do now?

Nothing is required. The Record is complete as it stands, it is yours, and many people stop there. Seeing a pattern does not end it, and the Atlas goes no further than naming it. If you want to go further, the next step is the Thread, which follows the pattern back to where it began and through the rest of your life.

My Record points to a cause in my childhood that I never mentioned. Why?

The Record names the pattern from what you wrote. Where it suggests an origin you did not describe, it is offering what the pattern usually points to, for you to test against your own history. You are free to reject it.

The Thread

What is the Thread, and what happens in the five sessions?

The Thread is five thirty-minute sessions with the same AI, which already knows your Atlas sitting. Each session picks up where the last one ended and follows the pattern one step further, into whatever part of your life you bring: a relationship, work, money, a decision. There is a short questionnaire of about ten minutes before the first session. At the end you receive a written report, roughly seven times the length of your Record.

Do I need to do the Atlas before the Thread?

Yes. The Thread starts from your Atlas sitting and your Record, so the Atlas comes first.

Will the Thread tell me what to do about the pattern?

It shows you where the pattern began, where it still reaches in your life, and how it comes undone, and the report ends with one if-then commitment in your own terms. It does not give you a programme of tasks. Five sessions do not produce permanent change by themselves, because living differently takes longer than seeing. That longer part is what the Witness is for.

Does it cover everything I've been through, or just one thing?

It follows one pattern, and one pattern usually runs through many situations. It goes into the areas of your life that you bring to it. It will not cover every event in a life in five sessions.

Do I have to start as soon as I pay? How quickly do I have to finish?

No. You can pay and begin when you are ready. It works best as one session a day for five days in a row, and you have sixty days from the day you bought it to finish all five. Each new session opens the day after the last one, at a time of day you can set.

What if I need to stop in the middle of a session?

Press Pause at the top of the session. The clock stops and stays stopped until you press Resume. The clock also pauses by itself if you leave the page, lock your phone or do nothing for three minutes on your turn. A session is up to thirty minutes of active time, and it ends with the reply to the first message you send in the last two minutes.

When do I get my report?

After your fifth session. Reports are generated every hour, so it normally arrives within an hour or two. It is emailed to you and kept in your account.

Do the books come with the Thread? Where are the books and the podcast?

Yes. Once your Thread report is delivered, a box called Books & Audio appears on your Thread page (Programs, then The Thread) with a button called Open Resources. You can also get there from You, then Library & resources, by the link at the top of that page. The books open to read in the app and the audio plays there. The podcast, The Architect Speaks, is free to everyone on Spotify, Apple Podcasts and YouTube.

Does the Thread remember what I said in the Atlas?

Yes. The Thread begins from your Atlas sitting and your Record. The Witness, in turn, holds your Thread report and your Thread sessions.

The Witness

What is the Witness?

The Witness is a daily practice that follows the Thread: one thirty-minute AI session a day that holds what the Thread mapped and what you have said since. You bring what is happening now, such as a conversation that went the old way or a choice in front of you. It is for people who want help living differently once they have seen the pattern. You need to have finished the Thread first.

Is the Witness included in the Thread? Will I be charged for it automatically?

No, and no. The Thread and the Witness are separate purchases, and nothing is charged unless you choose it. When you finish the Thread you are given one free forty-five-minute Witness session, to go through your report and decide. If you want to continue after that, you pick a plan.

Do I have to do the Witness after the Thread?

No. The Thread ends with a complete written report that is yours to keep, along with the thirty-three books. Some people stop there and carry it on their own. There is no separate self-guided programme.

How long does the Witness last?

Six months at most. It is paid by the month and you can cancel at any time. After your sixth monthly payment it ends by itself at the end of that month, and you are not charged again.

Prices, payment, refunds and cancelling

What does it all cost?

The Atlas is free. The Thread is $390, or $130 if you begin within seven days of your Atlas Record. The Witness is $79 a month. You can cancel at any time, and it runs for six months at most. Those are the prices of the three steps, in US dollars. They are also set out on The Whole Path.

Why is the Thread $130 for some people and $390 for others?

Finishing the Atlas earns a $260 credit towards the Thread. The credit lasts seven days from the date of your Record, and inside those seven days the Thread is $130. After that it is $390. The date your credit ends is shown in your account and in the emails you receive.

Is the $130 a single payment or a subscription?

A single payment. The Thread is paid once and never renews. The only ongoing charge anywhere in this work is the Witness, which is paid by the month for six months at most, and that begins only if you choose it.

I can't afford it. Is there a discount or a free place?

There is no discount beyond the seven-day credit. If it is out of reach, that is a complete answer, and your Record stays yours.

What currency are the prices in?

US dollars. Your card or bank converts the amount into your own currency when you pay.

How can I pay? Do you take Apple Pay or PayPal?

By card through Stripe, including Visa and Mastercard, and by Apple Pay where your device supports it. PayPal is not accepted.

Can I get a refund?

For the Thread, yes: it is refunded in full if you ask before you start your first session. Once the first session has started it is not refundable. The Witness can be cancelled at any time and stops at the end of the month you have paid for; months already paid are not refunded. To ask for a refund, email signal@codexofthearchitect.com.

How do I cancel the Witness?

Sign in, open Account, choose Manage Billing, and cancel there. Your access runs to the end of the month you have paid for and then stops. If you do nothing, the Witness ends by itself after your sixth monthly payment.

I've seen different prices in different emails. Which is right?

The prices on this page are the current ones. The pricing was changed in August and September 2026, and some people received emails carrying earlier figures. The amount shown at checkout is always the amount you pay.

Have I been signed up for anything by getting the book or doing the Atlas?

No. Signing up gives you the book, the Atlas and emails from Michael. No card is taken at any point before you choose to buy, so nothing can be charged.

Practical and technical

How do I sign in? I was never given a password.

You do not need a password. Go to app.codexofthearchitect.com/login, type your email address, leave the password box empty and choose Email me a sign-in link. An email called Your link back in arrives, and its link works for twenty-four hours. Use the same email address you signed up with, because a different address is a separate, empty account.

Do I have to give my email address?

Yes, to begin. The email address is where your Record and the free book are sent, and it is how you get back in. A first name and an email address are all that is asked for.

An email I was expecting hasn't arrived.

Check your spam and promotions folders, and search your inbox for signal@codexofthearchitect.com. If it is not there, ask for a new sign-in link at app.codexofthearchitect.com/login, or write to signal@codexofthearchitect.com.

Can I change the time my next session opens?

Yes. In the Thread and the Witness you can set a preferred hour, and each new session opens at that hour on the day after you finish the last one. If you open it later than that, it is still there.

Something went wrong during a session. What should I do?

Email signal@codexofthearchitect.com and say what happened and when. A session that was cut short by a fault is reset, so you do not lose it.

How do I stop the emails?

Use the unsubscribe link at the bottom of any email. Your account and your Record stay as they are.

Safety and crisis

Who is this not for?

It is for adults, eighteen or over, and it is recommended for people of twenty-five and over. It is not recommended for anyone experiencing suicidal thoughts, prone to self-harm, in active substance or drug recovery, living with an acquired brain injury, or diagnosed with a psychiatric illness. If that list includes you, talk to a qualified professional first.

What if I'm in crisis?

Contact a crisis line or someone you trust before anything else. This work is not built for crisis. In the US and Canada, call or text 988. In the UK and Ireland, Samaritans are on 116 123. In Australia, Lifeline is on 13 11 14. If you are in immediate danger, call your local emergency number.

Will it bring up difficult feelings?

It can. The questions go to things many people have avoided for years, and some people feel tired, tearful or unsettled afterwards. You can stop at any point. If what comes up is more than you can hold alone, talk to someone you trust or a professional before going further.

Therapy

Is this therapy?

No. It is built from a therapist's body of work, and it is not therapy or a substitute for it. It does not diagnose, no clinical relationship is formed, and nothing it says is medical advice.

Can I do this while I'm seeing a therapist?

Yes. Some people take their Record or their Thread report to their therapist, and some leave extra days between Thread sessions to do that. The Thread allows sixty days from the day you bought it, so there is room for that.

Therapy depends on a relationship. How can I trust an AI with this?

You may decide you cannot, and that is a reasonable position. The Atlas has no relationship with you and does not claim one. What it carries is the questions and the pattern-reading from twenty years of practice, applied to what you actually write. Some people find it easier to be honest in a text box than in front of another person, and some need a person in the room. If you need a person, this is the wrong tool for you.

Critics

Where is the evidence for this?

The framework comes from twenty years of clinical observation, and the book Sacrifice sets it against established research on attachment, stress and affect regulation. The thirteen objections raised most often are answered one by one on For Critics.

Is it written from a man's point of view?

Michael writes from his experience as a qualified therapist of two decades. The work is available to any adult. Both men and women use it just as successfully as each other.

Why does it keep going back to childhood?

Because that is usually where a pattern was first learned, and the work traces it there. You are not required to accept an origin it suggests. If that ground is already familiar to you, the more useful part is where the pattern is operating now.

The Atlas was blunt with me. Is that deliberate?

It is built to be accurate and direct, and it will not flatter you. It should never be cruel. If a reply read as an attack, that is a fault: email signal@codexofthearchitect.com with what it said.
