About the author
Michael Lauria
Qualified therapist, author and philosophical mythologist. The mind behind The Architect.
I'm a qualified therapist, and I spent twenty years in private practice, from 2006 to 2024: more than 25,000 hours in the chair with thousands of people, most of them men, along with many couples. Along the way I spent two years sitting with the dying in hospice and a year on a suicide hotline. Again and again I sat with people who could describe their own patterns with more clarity than most textbooks. They knew why they chose the partners they chose, why they said yes when they meant no, why the same exhaustion followed them from job to job. And most of them kept doing it anyway.
That gap, between understanding a pattern and actually living differently, is what I've spent my working life on. Eventually I left the chair to work on it full time.
The Architect
The Architect is the body of work that came out of those twenty years: thirty-three books, over five hundred episodes of The Architect Speaks podcast, and the frameworks underneath them. Its central idea is simple. Most people aren't living one problem after another. They're living one pattern, in different rooms: in their relationships, their work, their money, their body and the face they show the world. Before it came Forging Excalibur, my podcast and first book on men and masculinity.
I also built the Atlas, a free conversation that names the pattern running a person's life in a single sitting, and then gets out of the way. More than 1,300 people have used it. It isn't therapy and doesn't pretend to be. It's built to show you what's there, in your own words.
Books under my own name
- Obsolete: Who Are You When the Machine Can Do It All, and Death Is Optional? (out now). What's left of us when being needed stops answering the question of who we are.
- Twenty Years in the Chair (4 November 2026). An insider's account of the therapy industry, and why insight so rarely produces change.
- How to Be Michael Jackson: The Pattern Beneath the Performance.
- Forging Excalibur: Rediscover Your Masculinity, my first book.
Seven more, written during my years in practice, are on the way. All my books are published through Athanatos Press. The full list is at lauriareads.com.

- Men, midlife and the roles we can't put down
- AI, meaning and mental health
The record
This work has a public history going back to 2006: the therapy practice in Melbourne, then Forging Excalibur, then The Architect. The dated record, with the book, the podcast and the interviews, is at forgingexcalibur.com. The theoretical framework behind it is at archpsych.org.
