Say No And Watch What Happens: Self-Betrayal And The People Who Need It

Most people don't struggle to say no because they don't know how. They avoid it because they already know what the answer would be with two or three people in their life.

Setting a boundary is the fastest diagnostic you have. Say no, don't explain it, and watch what happens next.

One kind of person says "of course, no problem" and the whole thing is over in four seconds. Nothing is damaged. Usually something improves.

The other kind gets hurt. They perform surprise. They tell you they're surprised you'd say that after everything. They explain what they actually meant. They ask if you're alright, in that voice. And by the end of it your no has disappeared and you're the one apologising.

Nobody raised their voice. Everybody stayed warm. It was still a negotiation you never agreed to enter, conducted in the language of care.

This is self-betrayal as incoherent sacrifice: the small daily trades you make for belonging, acceptance and approval, which compound over twenty or thirty years into a life you don't recognise as your own.

I'm Michael Lauria. I've spent twenty years as a therapist, and this is what I watched happen over and over again.
