Why You Keep Giving Up What You Want to Feel Safe
Part 2 of 2 of The Reason for the Work.
In Part 1 you were left standing on a life you didn't build, and some part of you already knew it. This is the map out.
Underneath everything is one machine, and it can be said in a single sentence: in every part of your life you're defending a life you didn't choose, and you're paying for that defence with a sacrifice you make out of fear. You give up the true thing to keep the safe thing, and then you call it being responsible.
Here it is, room by room. The self, and the ladder you've climbed for thirty years. Sacrifice, and the difference between the kind that builds a self and the kind that only empties you out. The institutions, and the fix that's built to never let you finish. And the oldest room of all, where the first rungs were laid down and made holy, so that questioning them would feel like a sin. One machine, running the same way in every one of them.
Walked in order, it stops being an idea you forget by tomorrow and becomes a way of seeing your own life that you can finally put down. You start catching the machine at work in real time: the unmeant yes as it's leaving your mouth, the guilt arriving to guard a rule you never agreed to.
