Is College / University Worth It?

Young people were promised a payoff for the degree, and it isn't there, and the anger is real grief aimed at the wrong thing. College was sold as job training, priced like an investment, but its real value was never the job. Two things have torn the disguise off: the credential stopped being scarce, and automation is deleting the entry-level work it was a ticket to, so by the time today's eighteen-year-old graduates, the job the credential trains for may not exist.

Stated directly: universities have largely lost their commercial function, and the best they still offer isn't a feature of the credential, it's a feature of the person who committed to something hard and saw it through.
