Years ago, when I was working in the coaching industry in Australia, though I was a trained therapist, not a weekend certified practitioner, I became aware of a woman in Queensland who had built a very specific business model. She would promote her NLP certification weekends across every social media platform she could find. She charged around $1,000 per person for the initial event and she would fill the room dozens of people at each one. That weekend, she would teach them an NLP, but they didn't know she was also using NLP on them.
The techniques she was demonstrating were simultaneously the sales mechanism for the next level. She wasn't just teaching them how to influence other people's psychology, she was influencing theirs, specifically toward the conclusion that they needed the practitioner certification. A month later, the same people would return another weekend, another $5,000, and at the end of four total days of training, they received a certificate certified NLP master practitioner certified by her. And then I watched them appear on social media, one by one, new logos, new websites, new Instagram bios, reading, master and NLP coach.

After four days of training, four days in which they were the subject of the very techniques they were now claiming mastery of. She didn't just certify them, she taught them, had a weaponized NLP to build coaching businesses and acquire clients. She was not training practitioners, she was reproducing herself.
This is the reproduction cycle of the personal development industry made visible in one concrete sequence. And it operates identically whether the modality is NLP, life coaching, breath work, manifestation, or only one of the hundreds of branded methodologies currently being certified in weekend workshops worldwide. Here's the cycle. One person with enough charisma and marketing ability to fill a room creates a certification program.
The program trains people fast at costs enough to feel like an investment, but not enough to trigger serious due diligence. It produces a certificate that looks like authority, teaches the newly certified how to market themselves, and it sends them out to the world to find vulnerable people. This is not legally a pyramid scheme, but it's structurally identical to one. The value flows upward, certificates flow downward.
And at the bottom of the pyramid are the people who actually need help. The ones paying $150 an hour for someone whose entire qualification consists of four days of being a student. Now let me name what's actually happening at the structural level, because the framework I've built makes this visible in a way surface level criticism does not. The woman running the certification is operating from what I call the saviour fragment, a part of the self that measures its worth through being needed, through helping, through creating dependency and calling its service.
She's building an empire of little saviors. Each one goes out into the world needing to be needed, needing clients to validate their new identity and needing vulnerable people to justify the investment they made in the certification. And let's never forget that side by side with the saviour fragment is also the performer fragment, because the charismatic NLP practitioner needs to also perform authority in order to be accepted in that authority. And then the clients those practitioners find, they are people whose exiled fragments are reaching for anyone who promises to bring them home.
People who have tried everything, people who are desperate enough to trust a stranger on Facebook with a Canva logo and an Instagram grid of sunset quotes. This is what the industry will never name, fragrance coaching fragments, the saviour fragment and the performer fragment in the practitioner finds the wound in the market and both enter a transaction that serves neither. The client gets temporary relief, the coach gets temporary income and temporary identity validation and both call it transformation and service. No one has been transformed and there has been no service.
Because the wound that brought the client to coaching is now funding the wound that brought the coach to the industry. Here's the number that makes this concrete. Most coaches own less than $30,000 a year from coaching. That means the person telling you they can restructure your psychology for abundance cannot even pay their own car repair bill.
The person coaching you through your financial patterns can't fix their own. The spare bedroom with the ring light is not a coaching practice. It's a saviour fragment with a payment link. Now this is in cruelty toward these practitioners.
Many of them are sincere. Many of them genuinely want to help. The problem is not the sincerity. The problem is that sincerity without competence and sincerity without self-examination does not produce transformation.
It produces two fragmented people in a transactional relationship, both convinced they're growing neither of them touching the architecture. A therapist requires a master's degree, thousands of hours of supervised clinical practice, licensing examinations, ongoing professional development, ethical oversight, a mechanism for complaints. I'm not even saying that industry is coherent. But at least it provides sufficient structure so that that person is more equipped to help someone on a level that might actually make some semblance of a difference for them.
A life coach only requires a credit card and a website. And right now, the life coach is more likely to be the one telling you that they can rewire your psychology because the therapist was trained to be honest about the limits of their competence and the coach was trained to sell.
