Why you still feel guilt long after leaving church.

Why does a man who left church twenty years ago still crave confession? He does not believe anymore, but when he lies or snaps at his children the pressure builds until he confesses to someone: wife, friend, therapist. The booth is gone, the mechanism remains. The very existence of apologetics, prepackaged arguments against any doubt, is an admission that the belief system cannot survive open inquiry unarmed.Seeing this clearly does not minimise God, the divine, or the sacred.

It clarifies the institution you are dealing with. If your faith survives this seeing, it is real faith. If your faith requires not looking, it is compliance. Real faith can hold history.
