Nobody Walks Into Therapy Guilty: Why Being Understood Is Not Being Free
I sat in that chair for years. The therapist's chair. I trained for it, I believed in it, and I spent a long time listening to people tell me the truth about their lives, or the version of it they could bear to say out loud.
And a lot of people do not actually change in that room. Not because their therapist is bad. Some of them are the finest people I have ever met. They stay stuck for a reason that is built into the room itself, and once you see it you cannot ignore it.
Think about what therapy gives you. Once a week you sit with one person who is not in your life. They do not know your partner, they do not work with you, they have no stake in the story. And you get to tell them your side of it.
But look at what that room is quietly built around. It is built around your account. Your telling. And almost every tool you are handed is a tool for managing someone else. How to handle your difficult mother. How to set a boundary with your partner without the guilt. Week after week you get a little better at managing everyone else's dysfunction, and week after week one quiet idea gets stronger underneath it all. That the problem is out there.
Now take the best therapist alive. Purest intentions, brilliant at the work, genuinely wants you free. They are still working from your account of your life. That is all they have to go on. And your account is the one thing you were built, from about the age of three, to defend.
So the room made to help you see yourself slowly becomes the room where you get better than anyone alive at the version of yourself that survives being seen.
Twenty years as a therapist. None of this is an attack on therapy or on the people doing it. It is what the structure does.
