What Druids, Witches and Alchemists Were Really Doing | The Oldest Work (Part 1 of 3)

They were never talking about metal.

For thousands of years, under different names in different centuries, human beings were doing one thing: taking a form they did not want and turning it into one they could use. The Druids called it descending to the underworld. The village woman called it keeping the wolves from the door. The alchemists called it turning lead into gold. Carl Jung called it individuation. It is the same act underneath, and it has one name: transmutation.

This is Part 1 of a three-part series on what I call the oldest work. The thing that looks like the newest idea in the world, psychology, self-help, even technology, is in truth one of the oldest.
